The Neighborhood Leadership Series (NLS) is a great starting place to gain the knowledge and skills to become a community leader. The program includes seven weekly learning sessions and ends with a graduation celebration:

  • Session 1: Tuesday, Oct. 23 – Teambuilding Exercises and NLS Alumni Discussion Panel

  • Session 2: Tuesday, Oct. 30 – History of Marshall-Ridley Choice Neighborhood

  • Session 3: Tuesday, Nov. 6 – Conflict Resolution and Consensus-Building

  • Session 4: Tuesday, Nov. 13 – Local Government 101: Ways to Get Involved and Be Heard

  • Session 5: Tuesday, Nov. 20 – Leadership and Community Organizing 101

  • Session 6: Tuesday, Nov. 27 – Community Resources and How to Start a Business or Non-Profit

  • Session 7: Tuesday, Dec. 4 – NLS Recap and Debrief

  • Session 8: Friday, Dec. 7 - Graduation Ceremony

Sessions will take place from 6—8 p.m. at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center, 2410 Wickham Ave. Dinner and networking will begin at 5:30 p.m. Registration is free, but space is limited.

Because NLS is part of the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative, we must give priority consideration to those who live in the Marshall-Ridley neighborhood. If you are not sure whether you live in the neighborhood boundaries (39th Street to the north, Hampton Roads harbor to the south, I-664 to the west, and Marshall Avenue and the former Chase Bag property to the east), you can check the map or call 757-926-8761.

Please register by contacting Latara Branch at branchls@nnva.gov or 757-926-8081.
