There are a variety of Back-to-School events taking place in the Southeast Community this year. Please note: this list has been curated from social media and other sources, but unless noted, the events are not directly affiliated with the Marshall-Ridley Choice Neighborhood Initiative. This list is simply a resource that may be helpful to residents of the CNI area and the greater Southeast Community in Newport News.

  • Wednesday, Aug. 21, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Achievable Dream Academy, 726 16th St.

    Ready to Go! Back-to-School Bash: Hosted by the Urban League of Hampton Roads, Inc. and ULHR Health & Wellness. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Come for games, face painting, food, music, and fun. Call 757-627-0864 for more information.

  • Thursday, Aug. 22, noon-3 p.m. at Family Investment Center, 600 C Ridley Cir.

    Community Resource Fair: Please note: this event is open to Ridley residents only. Hosted by the Newport News Redevelopment & Housing Authority, this event features a book bag give-away, kids’ activities, and raffles. For more information, call 757-928-3680.

  • Saturday, Aug. 24, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at C. Waldo Scott Center for HOPE, 3100 Wickham Ave.

    3rd Annual Back to School Drive: C. Waldo Scott Center for HOPE, in partnership with Twin Techs and Turnin’ Point are helping you get ready for the school year with this event, which offers free bookbags, school supplies, food and drinks, haircuts and more!   • Saturday, Aug. 24, 1-3 p.m. at The James A. Fields House, 617 27th St.

    Back-to-School Community Fest: The James A. Fields House, Inc. and Downtown Newport News Merchants and Neighbors Association, Inc. host a free school supply give-away. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is not required. Call 757-813-6014 for more information.

  • Sunday, Sept. 1, 1 p.m. at Achievable Dream Academy, 726 16th St.

    10th Annual Back-to-School Supply Drive: Evolution of Ethnic Beauties in collaboration with Educate. Inspire. Transform! presents the 10th Annual Back-to-School Supply Drive. First come, first served. For more information or to make a donation, contact moniqueyesenia@gmail.com.
